This week, I saw my friend posted an announcement to several friends on Facebook. It was a marketing material. I know that social networks, microblogging, and blogs are now considered as great tools for creating network. Talking about business of course. But I think this one is cheap. I consider this one as spamming. Instead of building network with social network, he might be loosing contact he actually know.
So how do you define network? Well, if you think that your network is everybody in your address book, your phone book, or friend list on Facebook… You might want to think again. What if they put your email address on spam filter black list? Or block you on Facebook? If you send a cheap marketing material, it surely can easily be done. So what kind of network you should build by blogs or social networks?
Let consider blogs and social networks as an easy to use tool to build your personal branding. And think network is not just how many people you can send marketing materials. Think network as how many people will contact you… when they need your service. Blogs and social networks is easy to use. You can publish many great content that can give your network many information about your profile. Let they come to you, and don’t push your marketing stuff to them. Trust me, many of them don’t like it. At least I don’t like it.
In the old ‘Web 1.0′ way, many companies use it to give information about their products or services. And they use streamline media to promote their brand. It will be very expensive to advertise with details, because can take a lot of space and time. So they will add ‘for details, visit their company URL‘. I don’t think we can compete with that. If you just fill information about your products or services on a blog or social network, you are not using web 2.0 advantage.
Blogosphere are developing very fast because the contents. I believe that now sometimes you can get more information from blogs than from streamline media. How come? In writing blogs, bloggers can write almost anything. Yes, they have to follow some rules an ethics. But not as strict as they have in streamline media. They can write about a new product as example. While streamline media have to wait for the press release, they can posts their review far before that. And for another example, many publisher won’t publish ‘not salable materials’. It’s not it actually ‘not salable’. But don’t have wide market. And the other example, many companies will not post content if they think there will be a conflict of interests. Let’s say a company that provide trainings, will not publish tutorials or tips and tricks that can be sold. Here is your opportunity. You can show your competence in your post. If they follow your posts, if they need services they will contact you. This is what I’m doing with TentangCAD.
Social networks? I don’t have many experience in this area. I think depending on this one only, is not giving great benefit. Except, you are already well known with your personal brand. If not, you can integrate your social networks to other services, like your blog. It will do no harm having this one. At least you can spread your blog links and your profile. But get connected to your friends is always a good thing. You might not expanding your network fast with social network, but at least you can maintain your network with it.
